"This selection of roadways is perfect for travelers
who like to dally in towns and locations that other roadways
bypass or that have simply been forgotten," said Bob
Kocher, automotive and travel writer. "This is where
you can find stretches of road that transcend function to
become the destination."
Kocher is one of a team of nine seasoned and award-winning
automotive journalists who selected the roadways to be included
in America's Legendary Drives.
The site features both short and long journeys rich in scenery
and views, winding travelers through national parks, past
majestic waterfalls and up mountains. The drives vary from
coastline ventures that offer seal- and whale-watching opportunities,
to day-trips through the Amish countryside with its Old World
charm, to an adventurous drive to the Arctic Circle.
The launch of America's Legendary Drives is an opportunity
for Firestone to celebrate a 100-plus-year tradition of cultivating
automotive travel in the United States. Harvey S. Firestone,
who founded Firestone in 1900, was a strong supporter of the
Good Roads movement, which led to increased federal involvement
in highway funding. Along with Henry Ford and Thomas Edison,
Firestone participated in cross-country trips to call attention
to the need for better highways.
"Firestone today continues this tradition of supporting
highway improvements and links it with a commitment to conserving
our national environmental treasures, such as the Bridgestone/Firestone
Centennial Wilderness in Tennessee. Our company has long been
focused on preserving natural areas and we hope that these
road trips will showcase all that our vast country has to
offer," said Christine Karbowiak, BFAH vice president
of public affairs.
